Cynthia Kooima, MD
Dr. Kooima is Sports Medicine Fellowship trained and experienced in knee, shoulder, and hip arthroscopy. She graduated with a degree in Biology from the University of Michigan before going on to medical school at Michigan State University where she graduated with honors. Dr. Kooima was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society while at Michigan State University. Her interest in sports medicine deepened while completing her residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. During her residency she trained under the team physicians for the Detroit Lions and Red Wings. Dr. Kooima then chose the Institute for Bone and Joint Disorders in Phoenix for her Sports Medicine Fellowship where she learned operative and non-operative treatment for a variety of athletic injuries.
Dr. Kooima is committed to taking care of all of her patients, from the high-performance athlete looking to compete again to the person looking to run errands without pain. She has previously served as the team physician for the Arizona Derby Dames, the local female banked track roller derby league. She is currently the team doctor for Gilbert High School. Dr. Kooima is a member of the Arthoscopy Association of North America, the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the Western Orthopedic Association.
Having been active in sports all of her life, Dr. Kooima understands the desire to return to your sport as soon as possible. She has competed in basketball, softball, and triathlons. Her current passions include cycling, skiing, and keeping up with her 2 dogs on their daily walks. She also enjoys travel, watching movies and reading.
