Dr. Austin F. Smith Orthopedic Hip and Shoulder Specialist

PHOENIX – OrthoArizona is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Austin F. Smith to the shoulder and hip service lines. Dr. Smith will serve patients out of OrthoArizona’s North Gilbert and South Gilbert locations.

Dr. Austin Smith earned a degree in engineering with Honors and Distinction at the University of Kansas School of Engineering where he was awarded for his research in bone, cartilage and tendon tissue engineering. He obtained his medical degree at the KU School of Medicine in Kansas City, KS where he performed cutting-edge bioengineering research in orthopaedics and established an international collaboration in Argentina.

Following medical school, he completed a 5-year orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Louisville in Kentucky where he received the first-place resident research award 4 years in a row. After residency, Dr. Smith completed additional training at a top fellowship in shoulder surgery with world renown experts at the Florida Orthopaedic Institute. He was awarded first-place for his original research during fellowship.

Dr. Smith completed additional fellowship training in shoulder and hip surgery with an international fellowship in France and Switzerland where he learned new and unique treatments from distinguished international experts.

He performs a wide array of shoulder and hip procedures including arthroscopic and minimally invasive procedures, total joint replacement, and complex and revision surgery. Dr. Smith is trained in muscle sparing anterior hip replacement and is one of a few shoulder surgeons trained in muscle sparing shoulder replacement which preserves the rotator cuff muscles during shoulder arthroplasty.

Dr. Smith grew up in rural Kansas and comes from a small-town, typical Midwest family. He and his wife, Kayla, like spending time with their family and enjoying Kansas City-style BBQ from the smoker.

Growing up, Dr. Smith built a house from the ground up each summer with his father and brothers in the family business, leading to an interest in remodeling projects and working on cars. He built a Factory Five Racing sub-four-second kit car and has completed many remodeling projects.
