Frequently Asked Questions About Surgery

Common Surgery Questions for Before & After Surgery

When and where does Dr. Hansen perform surgery?

All surgeries are scheduled on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and some Fridays. Sugeries are performed at Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, Arizona spine and Joint Hospital, and occasionally at Banner Gateway Surgery Center.

What time is my surgery?

You will receive a call from Dr. Hansen’s assistant the day before surgery before 5:30pm with your hospital check in time.

Do I need a pre-operative appointment?

Dr. Hansen does require a pre-operative appointment for most surgeries. This is to be scheduled at least 1 week prior to your surgery. Please bring your updated medication list. If pre-operative testing was ordered for your surgery, please complete these tests prior to your appointment.

When are my post-operative appointments?

1-3 days after surgery with Dr. Hansen’s Physician Assistant, Geoff Streeter.
10-14 days after surgery with Dr. Hansen.

Do I need physical therapy?

Dr. Hansen will inform you if therapy is necessary for your recovery, most surgeries require physical therapy. Please schedule an appointment at Mezona Physical Therapy 480-324-3731. Most surgeries require physical therapy to start immediately, it is important to have this scheduled before the day of surgery. Please inform Dr. Hansen’s assistant if you wish to have your physical therapy at a different location.

Do I need surgical clearance?

Dr. Hansen will inform you if surgical clearance is necessary for your surgery. If so, a surgical clearance request will be given to you to take to your doctor. It is your responsibility to schedule an appointment with your primary care doctor and cardiologist (if necessary) at least 2 weeks before surgery. This will allow enough time for your clearance to be processed. Your doctor will fax your clearance information to our office when complete (fax: 480-833-2136).
Note: All lab work is valid for 30 days. Normal chest X-rays and normal EKGs are valid for 6 months, if you have recently had these tests done, please inform Dr. Hansen’s assistant.

Will I receive pain medication before surgery?

You will be given all medication prescriptions the day of surgery. Prescriptions will not be written, called or faxed into your pharmacy prior to surgery.

Will I have restrictions after surgery?

Your restrictions will be discussed in more detail at your first post op appointment.
You will also be given post op instructions the day of surgery.

What do I wear?

Please wear comfortable loose clothing. For shoulder surgery, a large zip up or button up shirt is ideal.

What do I bring?

Bring your Identification card, insurance cards, and a medication/allergy list. If a brace, sling, or crutches were given to you please do not remove from the packaging and bring with you to the hospital.

What if I already have a brace or sling from a previous injury?

Dr. Hansen discourages patients from wearing used braces or slings after surgery. Bringing used products into the Operating Room is unsanitary and can increase your risk of infection. Used walkers and crutches are okay to reuse as long as they are the correct size for you.

What is the cost of my surgery?

Depending on your insurance, your surgery fees cannot be determined until our office has received authorization from your insurance. There is no need to call your insurance; Mezona Orthopaedic will handle this for you. A billing representative will contact you if you have a deposit to pay prior to surgery. If you have questions about the status of your authorization please call (480) 964-2908 and ask to speak to a surgery authorization representative. Please remember the anesthesiologist, hospital, and physical therapy fees are separate from Dr. Hansen’s fees.

What is the process for FMLA or Short Term Disability?

Your surgeon and employer will determine how long you will need to be away from work. If you need FMLA or Short Term Disability, please inform your employer. The forms can be faxed to 480-833-2136 or dropped off at either Mezona Orthopaedic office for processing. There is a processing fee for these forms. Once complete, a representative in the Mezona Orthopaedic medical records department will send the forms back to your employer.

Please contact Dr. Hansen’s assistant at (480) 964-2908 or schedule an appointment if you have additional questions about your surgery.
