About
About Dr. Burgess
Dr. Kraig Burgess is a highly respected expert in orthopedic hand and upper extremity surgery. After earning his bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University, he completed his medical training at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. He then pursued a rigorous internship and residency in general orthopedics, followed by an additional fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where he gained extensive experience in trauma and reconstructive procedures. Cleveland Clinic, consistently ranked among the top hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, also boasts one of the country’s leading orthopedic surgery departments.
Dr. Burgess holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Hand Surgery, further underscoring his expertise. His clinical and biomechanical research has been featured in The Journal of Hand Surgery, and he has presented nationally on topics ranging from joint replacement and tendon injuries to carpal tunnel syndrome and complex wrist fractures. Since establishing his practice in the Phoenix area, he has continued to lecture and has been featured in local media outlets.
Dr. Burgess approach to patient care centers around education and shared decision-making. He is committed to empowering his patients by helping them fully understand their condition and treatment options, whether surgical or nonsurgical. “You are the captain of this ship,” he tells his patients, fostering a collaborative environment where patients feel informed and confident in their care decisions.
Outside of his medical career, Dr. Burgess values time with his family, particularly as they embark on memorable vacations together. He also embraces endurance-based challenges, having completed IRONMAN triathlons, scaled volcanoes, summited Mount Olympus in Greece, and participated in grueling Navy SEAL training courses. These experiences, often marked by pain and revelation, have shaped his appreciation for a life fully lived.
Dr. Burgess commitment to giving back is evident through his medical missions in Sinaloa, Mexico, and his service as a civilian reserve medic with the Arizona Department of Public Safety’s SWAT team. This role allows him to provide on-scene medical support, fulfilling a long-standing desire to serve his community.
What drives Dr. Burgess in his profession is the personal connection he builds with patients and the transformative impact of his care. Whether it's a patient regaining the ability to feel their hand, making their first football tackle post-surgery, or returning to work pain-free, these moments bring him immense joy. Having practiced medicine since 2000, he remains passionate about improving the quality of life for his patients through expert, compassionate care.
