About
About Dr. Burnham
Dr. Robert Burnham Jr. is a fellowship-trained orthopedic doctor specializing in total joint and general orthopedics, including caring for various ailments of the hip and knee in adults. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS).
Dr. Burnham treats a myriad of conditions, including but not limited to hip and knee arthritis, failed hip and knee replacements, and lower extremity fractures (hip, femur, knee, tibia, ankle). He has training in several surgical procedures, including total and partial knee replacements and anterior approach hip replacements. For partial and total knee replacement, he has extensive experience with robotic-assisted technology. He utilizes a subvastus muscle-sparing approach, which avoids cutting through any muscle, tendons, or ligaments, which helps reduce postoperative pain and enhances recovery. For hip replacement, he uses a direct anterior approach, which is a minimally invasive muscle-sparing technique that facilitates quicker recovery and reduced postoperative pain.
As an orthopedic doctor, patient care is always at the forefront of Dr. Burnham’s mind, and he believes that each and every patient should be treated as if they were his own family. He believes that each patient should have a thorough understanding of their specific condition and be able to choose what the best treatment option is for themselves.
Dr. Burnham has already contributed to several peer-reviewed research articles, including work on the surgical fixation of bimalleolar equivalent ankle fractures, bioresorbable polymer anchors, knee range of motion after total knee arthroplasty, and more.
He has also won several grants, including the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) Research Start-Up Grant to conduct his research on the effect of knee height asymmetry on gait biomechanics. Dr. Burnham also won the Schwartz Internship & Traveling Fellowship Award, which is given to one graduating chief resident at Loyola Medical Center to pursue a 4- to 6-week experience to enhance learning regarding individual practice plans or humanitarian value.
Outside of the office, Dr. Burnham enjoys spending time with his family, specifically engaging in outdoor activities, such as hiking, pickleball, biking, skiing, and snowboarding. He particularly enjoys traveling to other countries to experience the food, culture, and meeting new people.
